Three of the members of this quartet (Daryl McGirr, Dave Hein and Paul Didier) have been singing together since August of 2002. Their first quartet was The Prairie Dog Flats, with Dave Longenecker on Tenor. In July of 2004 Dave Longenecker decided it was too much for him and had to leave the chorus and the quartet. At that point Bob Morton became the Tenor and The Grand Valley Four quartet was born. In October 2007 Bob Morton began experiencing a considerable amount of illness and had to bow out of the chorus and the quartet. At that point Lloyd Unfred became part of the quartet replacing Bob as Tenor. Whether the quartet name will change is still undecided.
Daryl is a very enthusiastic LEAD. He has sung in church choirs for 45 years and brings lots of experience to the quartet. Daryl also played the guitar with church choirs and folk groups. Before he retired he spent many years as a technician with the Federal Department of Energy in Montrose. Daryl’s wife, Shirley, shares Daryl’s enjoyment of Barbershop music.
Lloyd has sung barbershop since he joined the Bookcliff chorus in 1975. He has sung bass, baritone or tenor in ten different quartets and three choruses. He retired from the construction business in 2002 and now spends most of his time with music. He presently sings in two quartets, church choir and in a classical chorus. Lloyd’s wife Cathy sings with him in a mixed quartet, church choir and the classical chorus.
Dave is a retired music instructor from School District #51. The bulk of his educational experience was teaching vocal music in the classroom setting from kindergarten through twelfth grade students. During his thirty-four years with the district he also spent time supervising the district’s music education program. He has also been involved in directing several adult groups in the valley. Dave has been the Assistant Director of the Bookcliff Barbershop Harmony Chorus since 2003. Dave’s expert ear and music background is a significant positive feature for the quartet.
Paul has been involved in barbershopping since the early 1970s and enjoys every aspect of the art. He has been in several quartets over the years in all of which he has been singing BASS. Over the years Paul sang in three other choruses in different states (New York, Oregon and California) before joining the Bookcliff Chorus in 2000. Before he retired he spent 37 years as a Vice President of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. Paul’s wife, Fran, is an enthusiastic supporter of barbershop music.
